Mumbai: The Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena has leveled sharp criticism against a new policy introduced by the Urban Development Department under the Eknath Shinde government. According to this policy, permission is to be granted for the construction of five-star hotels and malls—under the guise of ‘Integrated Sports Complexes’—on open spaces exceeding 5 hectares within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, and on spaces exceeding 10 hectares in the rest of Maharashtra.
Under this scheme, it has been stated that 70 percent of the playground area will be reserved for sports activities, while 30 percent will be allocated for commercial use. However, the Thackeray faction has alleged that this policy is merely a new formula for corruption. They have charged that this move will result in massive profits for builders and lead to an increased commercialization of public playgrounds.
The Thackeray Sena remarked, “Once one has untied the drawstring of their pajamas to grab money, what room is left for shame? Erecting hotels on playground land is akin to playing with the future of our children. The next generation will be left seeing playgrounds only in photographs.”
The Shiv Sena further asserted that the number of playgrounds in Mumbai and Maharashtra has already dwindled significantly. Due to the actions of builders and rampant encroachment, children are often forced to play on the streets or in parking lots. Now, by introducing this new policy, an assault is being launched even upon the few remaining playgrounds. This policy could potentially impact numerous iconic grounds, such as Shivaji Park, Azad Maidan, Wankhede Stadium, and Dadoji Konddev Stadium.
The Thackeray faction pointed out that this policy is being pushed through by altering regulations via the ‘back door,’ despite a clear directive from the Supreme Court stating that the designated nature of spaces reserved for recreation and playgrounds cannot be altered. “A mafia-style collusion has taken place between the government and builders,” was the scathing criticism leveled.
The Thackeray faction has posed a direct question to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis: “Do you endorse this policy? What, precisely, is your sports policy? What is the connection between the Sports Department and the Urban Development Department? How did the ‘Mindhes’ suddenly conceive the idea of ??revitalizing sports? Is this some mysterious ploy, or merely a fresh avenue for corruption?”
The Shiv Sena also noted that numerous sports organizations have already launched protests against this scheme. A demand has been raised to immediately revoke this policy in order to safeguard the future of Mumbai’s athletes, students, and children.
