Municipal Council-Nagar Panchayat vote counting fixed for December 21; Supreme Court's big decision

19-day wait ends; Candidates will have to wait until December 21
Mumbai/Nagpur, December 5: The results of the elections to the Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayats in Maharashtra held on December 2 will now be announced on December 21, 2025. The Supreme Court in its hearing today (Thursday) has upheld the Nagpur Bench's decision to postpone the vote counting to December 3.
The Nagpur Bench had ordered the vote counting to be postponed instead of December 3 as the triple test of OBC political reservation was not completed. Against this, the State Election Commission and some other petitioners had approached the Supreme Court. However, a bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice Dipankar Dutta held that the High Court's decision was correct and made December 21 the final date.
During the hearing, Chief Justice D. Y. The bench headed by Chandrachud once again ordered the completion of all local body elections by January 31, 2026. “The Election Commission will now have to show how the elections will be held within the stipulated time,” the Chief Justice said sternly.
With this decision, thousands of candidates who contested the elections of more than 150 municipal councils and more than 100 nagar panchayats in the state will have to wait for the results for another 16 days. On the other hand, OBC leaders have welcomed the decision and have reacted by saying, “Elections without reservation are injustice to the OBC community.”
