Nagpur: Bawankule issues stern warning regarding the reconstruction of the Ambedkar Cultural Bhavan; threatens agitation if there is a delay
Nagpur, January 24, 2026: After the demolition of the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Cultural Bhavan in Ambazari Garden, the demand for its reconstruction is gaining momentum. Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule expressed his anger on this issue and ordered that the Bhavan be rebuilt immediately on the same site. He warned that otherwise, the officers would be held responsible if an agitation ensues and a law and order situation arises.
The issue was raised in the District Planning Committee (DPC) meeting. Former minister and MLA Dr. Nitin Raut complained that the Bhavan had not been built on the same site as per the orders given in the previous DPC meeting. Officials stated that the site is closed off with tin sheets and access is restricted due to security. The Tourism Department cited a court stay order. However, when MLA Parinay Fuke suggested intervention in the Supreme Court, Bawankule clarified that the stay order was for another project, not for the reconstruction of the Ambedkar Bhavan.
Bawankule said, "Rebuild the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Cultural Bhavan on the same site where it was demolished. Otherwise, there will be an agitation, and a law and order situation will arise. You will be held responsible for it." He added that discussions have been held with the Chief Minister, and an approval of Rs. 10 crore has been received for the reconstruction. He also said that the Municipal Corporation, Tourism Department, and Public Works Department should take immediate action and clarify the court orders.
This issue is an emotional one for the Ambedkarite community. There is a possibility of a major agitation if there is a delay. Although the officials have stated that there are no legal hurdles, discontent is growing due to the lack of concrete action. Bawankule also warned that if the reconstruction does not happen, permission will not be given for other projects in the area.
