National OBC Federation Resolves to Stage Sit-in Protest in Delhi if Census Lacks Separate Column for OBCs
Nagpur: The National OBC Federation has decided to stage a sit-in protest at Jantar Mantar or Ramlila Maidan in Delhi during the Parliament's winter session to demand a dedicated column for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community in the census.
A crucial meeting of OBC leaders, office-bearers, and activists from the Vidarbha region was held in Nagpur today. The strategy for the upcoming agitation was finalized during this meeting, led by Babanrao Taywade, the National President of the National OBC Federation. Taywade stated that the protest would continue until a separate column for OBCs—similar to those for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST)—is included in the census application form.
The Federation maintains that a caste-based census is essential to ascertain the accurate population of the OBC community. Access to official data would facilitate the formulation of effective social, educational, and economic policies. The meeting emphasized the necessity of revealing the official OBC population count rather than relying on mere estimates for policy planning.
While various OBC organizations and groups are active in the state—with some differences of opinion on certain issues—Taywade appealed to all organizations, leaders, and activists to set aside internal differences and unite. A resolve was expressed to make the Delhi protest broad-based by involving various organizations, rather than limiting it to a single group. Preparations for public awareness campaigns and organizational meetings across the state will commence to this end.
Taywade also announced that a meeting of OBC organizations from across the country has been scheduled for September 20 to mobilize support for making this agitation a nationwide movement.
