New twist in Rahul Gandhi's defamation case: New surety appointed in Bhiwandi court
Bhiwandi: Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi appeared in the Bhiwandi District Additional Sessions Court on Saturday. He appeared in the court to complete an important procedure in the defamation case filed against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The roots of this case date back 12 years, in which Rahul Gandhi had linked the RSS to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.
During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi had held the RSS responsible for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi during a campaign meeting in Sonale village in Bhiwandi. RSS activist Rajesh Kunte had filed a defamation case under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code on this. Kunte claims that Rahul Gandhi's statement brought the organization into disrepute.
The examination-in-chief and cross-examination of the plaintiff in this case have been completed, and the testimony of the investigating police officers has also been recorded. Rahul Gandhi needed to present a new surety after the death of his previous guarantor, former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil. For this, Congress Maharashtra State President Harshvardhan Sakpal granted bail. The process was completed in the court of Judge P. M. Kolse and the new bail was accepted.
Rahul Gandhi's lawyer Narayan Iyer said, "As per the directions of the Supreme Court, cases of important persons have to be disposed of expeditiously. We are confident that justice will be done. We are on the side of truth and this case will bring truth before India." He further said that Rahul Gandhi will cooperate whenever the court calls for it.
During this hearing, tight police security was maintained in the court premises. This case has become a topic of discussion in political circles, and there is curiosity about the next hearing.
