Opposition disintegrated, hence lost strength

-Nobel Prize winning economist Amartya Sen said

-The government cares about the rich; Development slows down due to illiteracy, poor health, gender inequality

Kolkata. Nobel laureate Amartya Sen has said that there is no opposition unity in the country. Due to this it has lost most of its strength. There are many problems in the organization of Congress, which need to be improved.

In an interview to PTI, Sen said caste census can be considered, but India needs greater empowerment of the underprivileged through better education, healthcare and gender equality.

He further said that I am very proud to be a citizen of a democratic country like India, but there is a need to work harder to increase the democratic nature of the country.

Sen said the 'India' alliance failed to gain popularity as its key allies like the opposition JDU and RLD left the alliance.

Illiteracy and extraordinary gender inequality in the country

India's ruling class looks after the interests of the rich. Illiteracy, poor health care and extreme gender inequality have slowed the country's development and made it difficult for the poor to progress.

Opposition claims that BJP can change the Constitution if it returns to power? On this, Sen said that changing the Constitution could be linked to the government's greater focus on a particular religion, but it would not be of any benefit to the common people of India.

Focusing only on Hindus is deceiving others.

On the question of BJP getting more seats in the elections through Ayodhya Ram Temple and CAA, Sen said that such a thought is a betrayal. India is a secular country with a secular constitution. Focusing only on Hinduism may be easy for the majority of Hindus, but it would betray India's secular roots and multicultural nature.
