Thiruvananthapuram, May 2, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated India's first deep-water international multi-purpose port at Villingham near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. Built at a cost of ?8,900 crore, the port has the potential to revolutionize India's maritime trade. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani and several dignitaries.
Villingham port is India's first dedicated container transshipment port. This will now allow large cargo ships to come directly to India, reducing dependence on ports like Singapore and Colombo. The port will boost trade and commerce, and will also benefit Kerala's economy. Prime Minister Modi called it a "milestone" in the country's development.
