Pachpaoli Station In-charge Aniruddha Puri Suspended; Accused of Dereliction of Duty in Extortion Case Involving Threats to a Doctor

Nagpur: Aniruddha Puri, the Station In-charge (PI) of Pachpaoli, faced immediate suspension and transfer on Thursday (October 1) for dereliction of duty. He was accused of failing to take legal action despite the presentation of strong evidence against individuals who had threatened a doctor and demanded an extortion sum of ?12 lakh following a patient's death during treatment.
While taking this action, Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangare Patil sternly warned all officers that no negligence in duty would be tolerated henceforth, sending shockwaves through the police force. Puri has been suspended pending further inquiry and reassigned to the police headquarters.
What exactly is the case?
The incident occurred on September 5 at 'Hope Hospital,' run by Dr. B. K. Murali on Kamptee Road within the Pachpaoli police jurisdiction. Vitthal Sathe (57) had visited Dr. Murali for treatment on August 30. Sathe passed away on September 5 while undergoing treatment for gangrene in his leg.
It is alleged that following this incident, Sharad Sarode—the 'Yuva Sena' District Chief of the Shinde faction—along with others, threatened to defame the hospital and have its license revoked. They demanded a total of ?12 lakh in extortion money: ?10 lakh for themselves and ?2 lakh for the patient's family. Although the doctor had lodged a complaint regarding this, Puri was held responsible for the delay in taking action.
A case has now been registered at the police station against seven individuals, including Sharad Sarode, in connection with this matter. The Police Commissioner took this stern action after summarily seeking information and holding the official responsible for negligence in the discharge of duties.
