Path Cleared for Mill Workers to Secure Homes! Eknath Shinde Directs MHADA to Conduct Lottery for 2,521 Houses in Panvel-Kongaon
Mumbai: Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has directed MHADA to conduct a lottery for 2,521 houses located in Panvel-Kongaon for the benefit of mill workers across the Greater Mumbai region. Additionally, orders have been issued to establish a special committee—chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary (Housing)—specifically for the purpose of allocating homes to mill workers.
Following a meeting held at the Vidhan Bhavan on March 13 under the chairmanship of Eknath Shinde, the Housing Department released the minutes of the meeting on April 6. During this meeting, discussions were held regarding the allocation of homes to eligible workers in Shelu and Vangani. Furthermore, directives were issued to increase the availability of housing in Thane, Ulwe, Borivali, and Mira-Bhayandar, and to proceed with the lottery draw for the 2,521 houses situated in Panvel-Kongaon.
Tejas Kumbhar, President of the 'Girni Kamgar Tarun Swarajya Sanghatana' (Mill Workers' Youth Self-Rule Organization), has welcomed this decision. He has demanded that homes be made available to the maximum number of workers within Mumbai itself, and has urged for the immediate implementation of these directives.
**Groundbreaking Ceremony for Shelu Project Soon**
The housing project for mill workers in Shelu is being implemented through 'Karmayogi AVP Reality'. Eligible workers in this area have already submitted their letters of voluntary consent. With the groundbreaking ceremony for this project scheduled to be performed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on May 1st, the path has now been cleared for the consenting workers to receive their homes in the near future.
**Other Important Directives**
* The MMRDA is to undertake the repair work for the 2,521 houses located in the Raigad district; following the completion of these repairs, MHADA is to conduct the lottery draw.
* The feasibility of constructing new housing units on the land occupied by six NTC (National Textile Corporation) mills—specifically the Khatau Mill in Borivali, Tata Mill, the Naigaon site, and the Swadeshi Mill site—is to be thoroughly examined. A study should be conducted regarding the allocation of vacant tenements in transit camps to mill workers.
A corpus fund—similar to the provision made for slum rehabilitation projects—should be established for projects dedicated to mill workers.
An assessment should be undertaken to determine whether the availability of housing units can be increased by granting additional FSI.
Office bearers of the organization have also demanded the inclusion of the 'Girni Kamgar Tarun Swarajya Sanghatana' in the committee constituted by the Housing Department, with the aim of ensuring that justice reaches the ordinary mill workers residing in rural and remote areas.
