Political atmosphere heats up in Uttar Pradesh: Mohan Bhagwat's secret meetings spark talk of 'Mission 2027'

Lucknow: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Thursday. These closed-door discussions have created a stir in the state's politics. Although these meetings are being described as courtesy visits, there is talk of 'Mission UP' behind these visits in the backdrop of the 2027 assembly elections.
An RSS functionary said that such meetings always take place during Bhagwat's visits. These meetings are just discussions, no political decisions are taken in them. However, a BJP leader said that the social and political situation in Uttar Pradesh must have been discussed. The assembly elections are just a year away, and the state government and the BJP organization are entering election mode. There is also speculation of a reshuffle in the cabinet.
Bhagwat's first meeting with Yogi Adityanath took place in the evening at Saraswati Shishu Mandir in Lucknow's Nirala Nagar. This closed-door meeting lasted for about 30 minutes. Later in the morning, Keshav Prasad Maurya also met Bhagwat, which also lasted for 30 minutes. These meetings have started discussions in political circles against the backdrop of tension between Yogi and Maurya.
Meanwhile, Second Deputy Chief Minister Brijesh Pathak honored 101 young Sanskrit scholars (Batuk Brahmins) at his residence on Thursday morning. He applied tilak on their foreheads and showered flowers and wrote on social media, "It is our fortune to honor the Batuks." This incident is also attracting attention.
In the backdrop of these incidents, the tension between Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati and the BJP government has also been in the news recently. In January, he had gone on an 11-day fast after being prevented from taking a bath in the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj on Mauni Amavasya. He accused the BJP government of insulting Sanatan Dharma.
After the BJP's poor performance in Uttar Pradesh in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Maurya had made a statement at a party meeting that "the party is bigger than the government", which is seen as an indirect criticism of Yogi Adityanath's administration. Maurya suffered an unexpected defeat in the Sirathu constituency in the 2022 assembly elections, which his supporters say is due to an internal conspiracy. Maurya's absence from the Deepotsav program in Ayodhya in October was also noticed, which was attributed to the Bihar elections.
Maurya, who has a background in the RSS and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, was in the news for the chief minister's post in 2017. Now, for the 2027 elections, there is competition between parties like the BJP, Samajwadi Party, Congress and BSP for the support of the Brahmin and Dalit community. There is dissatisfaction in the upper caste community due to the protests against the UGC's caste reservation.
These visits have led to talk of RSS's influence on the UP BJP and efforts to resolve internal differences. However, no official explanation has been given about this. There is suspicion that this is a preparation for the 2027 elections.
