Protest by 700 NLSIU Students and Alumni; Opposition to Presence of CJI Surya Kant and BCI Chairman at Convocation
Bengaluru: Students and alumni of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) have strongly opposed the presence of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Bar Council of India (BCI) Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra at the upcoming convocation ceremony.
This opposition stems from the BCI's earlier decision to block the enrollment of students from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, as advocates. Although that order has since been withdrawn, the students remain dissatisfied.
Students and alumni issued a statement on August 15 condemning the action. Expressing solidarity with the NALSAR students, they noted that these students demonstrated courage and moral conviction by speaking truth to power. The statement has been signed by 409 current students (including 165 incoming students) and 128 alumni, totaling over 700 signatures.
BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra has apologized to the students for the order issued to State Bar Councils directing them not to enroll any graduates from NALSAR University as lawyers.
In their statement, the students acknowledged that the BCI has halted all actions against NALSAR. However, they emphasized that this does not alter the fact that a statutory body had initiated unconstitutional and illegal action against students and faculty of a public university.
Against this backdrop, NLSIU students and alumni have expressed their protest by opposing the presence of CJI Surya Kant and the BCI Chairman at the convocation ceremony.
