Pune: A 'Safe City' or a Hub of Rising Crime? Citizens Raise Questions

Pune: Although the police administration frequently claims that crime within the city has declined, the sense of insecurity among Pune residents appears undiminished. Recent incidents involving murders, shootings, gang clashes, and atrocities against women have created an atmosphere of fear among the citizenry.
MP Supriya Sule has also written to the Police Commissioner, questioning the claims regarding the reduction in crime. She pointed out a significant disparity between official statistics and the actual experiences of the citizens. She noted that residents in several parts of the city continue to harbor concerns regarding their safety during the night.
Conversely, the Pune Police Commissioner has asserted that the law and order situation in the city has improved, clarifying that strict measures are actively being implemented to curb crime. The administration maintains that the police have launched special campaigns against organized crime and have initiated preventive actions against numerous offenders.
However, data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) indicates an increase in incidents of violent crime in Pune. Consequently, the issue of urban safety has once again taken center stage in public discourse.
According to citizens, fostering a sense of safety in public spaces is far more crucial than merely observing fluctuations in crime statistics. Consequently, there is a growing demand for the police administration to implement more effective measures—beyond just citing statistics—to win back the trust of the citizens.
