Pune Residents, Get Ready! Proposal for Alternate-Day Water Supply Under Discussion News

Pune: A proposal to implement an alternate-day water supply in Pune city is currently under discussion, even though the Khadakwasla dam chain—which supplies water to the city—holds enough stock for approximately three months. The administration has begun seriously considering this proposal after the Water Resources Department instructed the Municipal Corporation to cut down on water usage, citing forecasts of potentially low rainfall and the need for future water planning.
The Municipal Corporation's water supply department has put forward two options: the first is to shut off the city's water supply entirely for one day a week, and the second is to implement an alternate-day supply schedule. According to the administration, an alternate-day supply could save about 25% of water, whereas a weekly one-day shutdown is expected to yield savings of around 10%.
Meanwhile, citizens are expressing dissatisfaction with this proposal. Many Pune residents are questioning the need for alternate-day supply when the dams still hold three months' worth of water. On the other hand, the administration maintains that proactive planning is essential to avert a future water crisis should the monsoon be delayed or rainfall prove insufficient.
A final decision on this matter will be taken following discussions involving the municipal administration, elected representatives, and an all-party meeting; citizens have been urged to use water judiciously.
