Rahul Gandhi Expresses Displeasure Over CBI Chief Selection Process; "Will Not Participate in a Biased Process"

New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has recused himself from the selection process for the new Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Terming the process as biased and opaque, he has written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Prime Minister Modi, Chief Justice Suryakant, and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi participated in the Selection Committee meeting held on Tuesday at the Prime Minister's residence. Following the meeting, Rahul Gandhi clarified his stance on social media.
Rahul Gandhi stated, "I am not a rubber stamp. I cannot be a part of this biased process merely to fulfill a formality. As part of my constitutional responsibility, I am boycotting this process."
Rahul Gandhi's Key Allegations:
Crucial documents regarding the candidates (such as Self-Appraisal Reports and 360-degree reports) were not provided in a timely manner.
During the meeting, the committee was suddenly asked to scrutinize the records of 69 candidates—a task that was practically impossible.
Allegations that the government is utilizing the CBI to target political opponents and journalists.
Rahul Gandhi noted that he had previously offered suggestions regarding the selection process in May 2025 and October 2025, but claimed that the government had ignored them.
Who is in the Race?
Names of IPS officers belonging to the 1989 to 1992 batches are being considered for the post of the new CBI Director. The list includes names such as RAW Chief Parag Jain, Maharashtra Director General of Police Sadanand Date, Shatrujit Singh Kapoor, CRPF Chief G.P. Singh, and Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, among others.
Rahul Gandhi's stance is likely to escalate the political controversy surrounding the selection of the CBI Director.
