Raj Thackeray urges to protect Marathi language, opposes Hindi compulsion’

Raj Thackeray: ‘Maharashtra Navnirman Sena President Raj Thackeray has taken a firm stand against Hindi language compulsion in the state. “Protecting Marathi language and culture is our priority. Hindi is not compulsory in states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, so why is this compulsion being imposed in Maharashtra?” he asked. Raj Thackeray has written a letter to the principals of schools against Hindi compulsion from the first grade.
Speaking at a press conference today, Raj Thackeray said, “There is no such restriction in the central government’s education policy that Hindi should be compulsory. The state government has the freedom to take decisions according to its culture. So why is this compulsion being imposed? Is there pressure from which officials behind this? What is the relationship between the three-language formula and the education policy? What is the third language taught in states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar?”
“From the beginning, Gujarati, English and Mathematics have been the subjects in Gujarati education policy. Hindi is not compulsory. So why is it compulsory in Maharashtra? Every language is valuable. Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Hindi are all excellent languages. But Hindi is not the national language, it is just a state language. So why is it being imposed on us?” Raj Thackeray asked a pointed question. “Till now, language was optional from class 6. Students were allowed to choose the language they wanted in college. So why is it compulsory now? Journalists should ask this question to the government,” he said.
“This press conference is for the Marathi language, parents, teachers and students. If this is made compulsory in Maharashtra, the existence of the Marathi language will be in danger. There is already apathy towards Marathi, if Hindi is imposed in it, this language and literature will become extinct. After independence, linguistic regions were formed, each state has its own language. So why is there an attempt to impose a foreign language here?” he asked.
‘Maharashtra should unite to protect Marathi’
“Editors, journalists, citizens and schools should strongly oppose this. If this compulsion is imposed, the future of Marathi language and literature will be in danger. Under the pressure of the central government, the cultural glory of Maharashtra will be destroyed. Everyone in Maharashtra should unite and oppose this. We will see how Hindi is taught in schools. If the government feels this is a challenge, then they should accept it,” said Raj Thackeray.
