Record Voter Turnout Despite Rain Obstacles; High Voting Recorded in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry

Mumbai/New Delhi, April 10, 2026: On Thursday (April 9), voting for the Legislative Assembly elections was held in a single phase across Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. According to preliminary data from the Election Commission, record-breaking voter turnout was recorded in all three regions. Despite the difficulties caused by the rain, voters participated with great enthusiasm. In some areas, voters had to use boats to reach their polling stations, while others exercised their franchise by standing in the rain.
Key Statistics (Approximate figures as of 5:00 PM):
Puducherry: 86.92% to 89% (Highest)
Assam: 84.42% to 85.64% (Increase compared to 2021)
Kerala: 75% to 78% (Higher than 2021)
In Assam, voter turnout had already crossed 18% by 9:00 AM. Long queues of voters were observed in several districts—including Jorhat, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, and Lakhimpur—even as heavy rain continued to fall. First-time young voters, senior citizens, and women participated in large numbers.
Voters in Kerala also demonstrated great enthusiasm. In some remote areas, voters had to rely on boats or other means of transport to reach their polling stations.
Puducherry, too, witnessed a high voter turnout. Voting for a total of 296 seats (Assam: 126; Kerala: 140; Puducherry: 30) was conducted peacefully. Security arrangements were stringent.
Voter Enthusiasm:
The Election Commission stated that all three regions recorded exceptionally high voter turnout. Notably, Assam and Puducherry witnessed a significant increase in turnout compared to the previous elections. The fact that even the rain failed to deter voters is being hailed as an auspicious sign for democracy. The final figures are expected to be announced soon, and the vote counting is likely to take place on April 13 or thereafter.
