Relief for parents in Vidarbha! Schools to operate in the morning session from June 22 due to heat; June 15 start date postponed
Schools in Vidarbha to open from June 22 due to intense heat; new circular issued by the Directorate of Education
Pune, June 9, 2026: In view of the severe heatwave currently prevailing in Vidarbha and considering the health of students, the government has taken a significant decision. All primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools in Vidarbha will commence on June 22, 2026, instead of June 15. The Directorate of Education issued a new circular today (June 9).
According to the circular—signed by the Director of Education (Secondary and Higher Secondary) Dr. Mahesh Palkar and the Director of Education (Primary) Sharad Gosavi—schools in Vidarbha will operate only during the morning session from June 22 to June 30. However, from July 1, 2026, all schools will resume operations according to their regular schedules.
Heatwave and background of the decision
Temperatures in Vidarbha are currently hovering around 41 to 42 degrees Celsius; in some areas, the mercury had even climbed to 47 degrees. This decision was taken because young children face the risk of heatstroke and dehydration in such adverse weather conditions.
Court petition and demands by parent-teacher associations
The Maharashtra State Primary Teachers' Committee (Vidarbha) and other organizations had filed a petition with the Nagpur Bench of the High Court. There had been persistent demands to postpone the reopening of schools to safeguard students' health. Taking cognizance of this petition, the government has granted this relief.
Important Note: Except for Vidarbha, schools in all other divisions of Maharashtra will commence regularly from June 15, 2026, as per the previously planned schedule.
This decision prioritizes student safety and has been welcomed by parents and teachers alike. For further information, please contact the respective schools or the Education Department.
