Rise in Teenage Pregnancies and Abortions in Mumbai; BMC Report Reveals Shocking Trends

Mumbai: According to a report by the Health Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), more than 20,000 women in Mumbai undergo abortions annually. Although there has been a marginal decline in the overall number of abortions over the last three years, the number of abortions among teenagers under the age of 19 has risen to a worrying level.
Year-wise Statistics (BMC Report):
2023-24: 30,511 Abortions (Medical: 25,835; Natural/Spontaneous: 4,676)
2024-25: 25,176 Abortions (Medical: 20,950; Natural/Spontaneous: 4,226)
2025-26: 23,923 Abortions (Medical: 20,552; Natural/Spontaneous: 3,371)
Increase Among Teenagers:
2023-24: 333 girls under the age of 19
2024-25: 716 girls (A significant increase)
2025-26: 365 girls
Primary Causes:
The majority of abortions occur due to the improper use of contraceptive methods or contraceptive failure. In 2023-24, this factor compelled over 22,000 women to undergo abortions.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is currently conducting awareness campaigns. The Corporation has also achieved success in preventing maternal deaths caused by abortions; while 19 women died in 2017-18, this figure has now dropped to nearly zero.
Health Department's View: There is an urgent need to place greater emphasis on sex education, awareness regarding contraceptives, and safe sexual practices among teenage girls.
