ST Bus Plunges into Deep Ravine; Driver and Passenger Die on the Spot on Holiday
Pune: Alephata (Pune) – A horrific accident occurred on Sunday evening (May 17, 2026) on the Kalyan-Ahilyanagar National Highway. An ST bus from the Bhiwandi depot suddenly went out of control near Gunjalwadi Phata, close to Belhe, and plunged into a deep ravine situated alongside the road. In this accident, the bus driver and one passenger died on the spot, while 20 other passengers sustained serious injuries. Some passengers had a narrow escape.
As it was a holiday, the bus was heavily crowded with passengers. While the bus was traveling along the highway, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to plummet directly into the ravine. The accident was so severe that the front section of the bus was completely crushed.
Immediately after the accident, local villagers, youths, and other passengers initiated immediate rescue operations. They broke open the bus windows and doors to extricate the injured passengers. Police personnel and ambulances arrived at the scene shortly thereafter. All seriously injured passengers have been admitted to various private hospitals in Alephata, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
The accident caused traffic disruption on the highway for some time. The police have initiated a further investigation into the incident.
