Sangli Agricultural Market Committee Trifurcated; Board of Directors Dissolved Before Term Ends—Injustice to Farmers: Jayant Patil

Sangli — The State Government has taken the decision to dissolve the existing Board of Directors of the Sangli Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) while it was still operational and before its tenure had been completed. Jayant Patil, a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar Faction) and an MLA, strongly condemned this decision during a press conference held in Sangli on Tuesday.
Jayant Patil stated, "The Sangli Market Committee is a significant marketplace within the country. Situated on the Karnataka border, it witnesses a massive influx of agricultural produce. The market committees of Jat and Kavathe Mahankal also fall under the jurisdiction of this committee. The elected directors from these three talukas had worked in coordination to ensure excellent governance. Yet, by dissolving the Board before its term had expired, the government has undermined democratic principles."
He further added, "It was imperative that the directors be allowed to complete their tenure before any division (trifurcation) of the market committees took place. The main market and the sub-markets are interdependent. This decision will result in significant losses for the farmers, porters, traders, and commission agents residing in the drought-prone talukas of Jat and Kavathe Mahankal."
Jayant Patil alleged that while the division of other market committees across the state remains pending, this action has been specifically targeted at Sangli alone. He expressed the view that this decision is politically motivated. "This stance adopted by the State Government borders on authoritarianism," he criticized.
Jayant Patil also informed that the Board of Directors has sought legal recourse against this decision, and a legal battle will be waged in the days to come.
Background:
The State Government has taken the decision to trifurcate the Sangli Market Committee and establish independent market committees. This move is set to impact the regions of Jat and Kavathe Mahankal, in addition to Sangli itself. Jayant Patil noted that, for years, the committee had remained robust and effective due to the coordinated efforts of directors representing the three respective talukas. When asked about the 10-year tenure limit for District Bank directors, Jayant Patil stated, “The Central Government's law has now become applicable to the state as well. However, taking into account the unique circumstances of the cooperative sector in Western Maharashtra, we have requested Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to grant an exemption.”
