Shocking action by Income Tax Department: Notices to 1050 police, Maharashtra Police Force shaken!

Buldhana, November 9, 2025 (Special Correspondent): A shocking incident has created a stir in the Maharashtra Police Force today. The Income Tax Department has sent notices to about 1050 police officers and employees of Buldhana district regarding tax evasion. This action came to light while examining income tax returns of the last three to four years, and claims of false investments and refunds have created immense tension in the police department. Superintendent of Police Nilesh Tambe has ordered all the concerned officers to immediately verify the income tax returns and file correction applications by November 10. Otherwise, he has also threatened to initiate a departmental inquiry and take personal responsibility.
This action was taken by the Buldhana office of the Income Tax Department, in which it has come to light that false claims were made under Section 80C. The police officers had made false claims of investments like insurance, PPF, mutual funds and home loan interest. In fact, the investigation revealed that there was no evidence of such investment. Interestingly, all these income tax returns were filed by the same chartered accountant, which raises the possibility of collusion. The Income Tax Department has also issued a notice to the Superintendent of Police, which has spread fear in the entire department.
Background to the action: A web of false claims unearthed
The investigation by the Income Tax Department revealed that several officers of the police force in Buldhana district had given false information in their income tax returns in the last three-four years. They claimed to have invested large amounts of money to avail tax benefits under Section 80C, but in reality, no such investment documents existed. For example, fraud was found in the claims for home loan interest or insurance policies. According to departmental officials, this amount could be in the lakhs, which makes the allegations of tax evasion serious.
"All these applications were filed through the same chartered accountant. This clearly shows the possibility of collusion. We are investigating the matter thoroughly and will take further action if required," said a senior Income Tax department official. However, this official has requested not to be named. This action is not limited to Buldhana district only, it is being reported that similar investigations are underway in other districts of Maharashtra as well. This case in the police force has taken place against the backdrop of the Maharashtra government's 'Shubhamangal' campaign, which has also raised questions on the administrative officers.
Superintendent of Police's strict stance: Deadline by November 10
Superintendent of Police Nilesh Tambe has taken immediate steps in this matter. He has issued instructions to all police officers through a letter, asking them to independently verify the income tax applications. "If any errors are found in the application of any officer, a correction application should be filed by November 10. Otherwise, a departmental inquiry will be initiated. The officer concerned will be fully responsible for the penalty or legal action taken by the Income Tax department," Tambe clarified.
This order has spread panic in the Buldhana police force. Several senior officers said in an informal discussion, "This case is not just about tax evasion, but also about the image of the department. We are all now investigating our own applications." However, some officers have tried to blame the chartered accountant, saying, "He is the one who gave us wrong advice." However, the Income Tax Department has clarified that the responsibility for the application filed lies with the filer.
Maharashtra Police Force: Political Color?
After this incident in the Maharashtra Police Force, it has become a topic of discussion in the police circles of the entire state. Fear has also increased among police officers in big cities like Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur, and questions are being raised, "Will such action be taken elsewhere?" Leaders of the opposition parties have attacked the government over this case, saying, "Corruption has increased in the police force, this action is revealing." On the other hand, the ruling party has responded by saying, "The law is being protected."
The case is likely to affect the morale and efficiency of the police force. It is also said that the impact on the functioning of local police stations in Buldhana district is being felt. The notices issued by the Income Tax Department include the names of 1,050 policemen, including officers from junior to senior levels. According to departmental sources, this number may increase as the investigation is ongoing.
Future implications: Legal fight and reforms
This action has now given police officers time to seek legal advice. Some officers have already contacted lawyers and are preparing to file rectification applications. The Income Tax Department has made it clear that spontaneous rectification can reduce the fine, but strict action will be taken if they behave recklessly.
The Maharashtra Police Force is now reportedly planning to launch an income tax literacy campaign on its own in the wake of this incident. "This case is a lesson. Let us be careful of such mistakes in the future," said a senior police officer. However, this action has raised questions about the credibility of the police force and the state government will have to take measures in this regard.
