Stampede at Ashokdham Temple – Rumors Spread After Trains Arrive Simultaneously; 8 Female Devotees Die

Bihar: Eight female devotees died in a stampede at the Ashokdham Temple in Lakhisarai, Bihar, on the occasion of Nag Panchami.
A tragic incident occurred on the morning of the third Monday of the holy month of Shravan at the famous Shri Indradamneshwar Mahadev Temple (Ashokdham) in Bihar's Lakhisarai district. A large number of devotees had gathered at the temple for *Jalabhishek* (ritual offering of water) and worship. Amidst this, chaos erupted near the Ashokdham halt, leading to a stampede within the temple premises. Eight female devotees lost their lives, and nine others were injured. The injured are currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
What happened?
According to the administration's preliminary investigation, trains arrived from both directions simultaneously at the Ashokdham halt on Monday morning. Upon seeing the trains, some youths present at the spot suddenly started running. An electric pole collapsed amidst the crowd. Following the pole's collapse, a rumor spread rapidly that people were suffering electric shocks. Panic gripped the devotees upon hearing this rumor, and people began running to save their lives. The sudden surge in crowd pressure triggered a stampede; many devotees fell to the ground and were crushed in the ensuing chaos.
Initial reports had suggested that the deaths were caused by electrocution from an 11,000-volt high-tension wire. However, the district administration clarified that the devotees died due to being crushed in the stampede, not from electrocution. The power supply was disconnected at the time of the incident, and the electric wires were insulated.
Relief and Rescue Operations
Upon receiving news of the incident, a team comprising police and administrative officials arrived at the scene. Relief and rescue operations were launched with the assistance of local residents and the administration. The injured were immediately admitted to the hospital. Administrative teams are working to identify the deceased and the injured. Security has been stepped up at the temple and in the surrounding area following the incident. An inquiry has been ordered to investigate the circumstances that led to the uncontrolled stampede.
