Student Protest in Delhi: BJP Concerned Over Lathi-charge; Congress and Rahul Gandhi Launch Attack; Is the Central Government Ready for Talks?
New Delhi: Significant unease has spread within the ruling BJP following a police lathi-charge during the ongoing student protests in Delhi regarding the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and exam-related chaos. The political atmosphere has heated up due to the police action against protesters during the 'Chalo Sansad' (March to Parliament) rally organized by the 'Cockroach Janata Party' (CJP).
The protesters had demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Allegations have been made that the police used lathi-charges and tear gas during the march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament. Reports indicate that many people—including students, women, and minors—were injured. However, the Delhi Police have stated that the action was carried out in a professional manner.
The Congress party strongly condemned the incident. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, labeled Prime Minister Narendra Modi as "India's most anti-youth Prime Minister." He termed the atrocities against students as "un-Indian" and demanded the resignation of both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, staged a sit-in protest at the Prime Minister's residence and demanded a parliamentary discussion on the student issue.
According to sources, the lathi-charge and the aggressive stance taken by the opposition have caused a stir within the BJP. Reports suggest that some Union Ministers and leaders have initiated discussions with student representatives. Indications suggest that the Modi government is preparing to adopt a softer stance on this issue.
Widespread anger has emerged among the youth due to the backdrop of Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike and the recurring irregularities in examinations. The protest has garnered support from numerous social activists and public figures, such as Dhruv Rathee and Sonu Sood.
The BJP, however, has dismissed the protest as a "political conspiracy" and maintained that the police action was necessary. There has been an uproar over this issue during the Monsoon Session of Parliament, and the opposition has been insisting on a discussion.
