TMC’s symbol frozen! Mamata Banerjee gets ‘Footballer’, rebels get ‘Envelope’; new names and symbols for both factions

The Election Commission has frozen the original name and symbol of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and assigned new names and symbols to both factions. The faction led by Mamata Banerjee will now be known as the ‘Mamata All India Trinamool Congress’. This group has been allotted the ‘Footballer’ as its election symbol. Meanwhile, the rebel faction led by Arup Roy has been named the ‘Democratic Trinamool Congress’ and has been allotted the ‘Envelope’ symbol.
Earlier, on Thursday night, the Election Commission had issued an interim order barring both factions from using the TMC’s original name and symbol. The ‘Twin Flowers’ symbol, which had served as the party's identity since 1998, has now been frozen. A major rebellion had erupted within the party following its defeat in the Assembly elections held in May. More than two-thirds of the MLAs had rebelled and elected Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition. The freezing of the name and symbol marks another major setback for Mamata Banerjee.
The Commission arrived at this decision under the “Election Symbols Order, 1968” after hearing both factions. Neither faction will be permitted to use the original name or symbol until a final verdict is reached. Both factions will contest the upcoming by-elections under their respective new names and symbols.
