Telangana CM Revanth Reddy's statement on Hindu gods sparks controversy; BJP calls for state-wide protest

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's controversial statement on Hindu gods has sparked a political controversy. Expressing anger over Reddy's comments, the BJP has announced a state-wide protest and has launched a massive campaign to derail the issue. The Congress party, however, supported Reddy's statement, claiming that it was taken out of context.
Revanth Reddy, while commenting on the gods of Hinduism at a recent public event, made the statement, "We will do what the gods cannot do." This statement was made in the context of a religious festival, where he appealed for emphasis on development and progress. However, when this video went viral on social media, Hindu organizations and BJP workers expressed strong displeasure over it. BJP leader and state president Bandi Karnat said, "CM Reddy's statement is an insult to Hindu sentiments. We will not tolerate this. Protest rallies will be taken out across the state from tomorrow."
The BJP-led agitation will include marches in major cities including Hyderabad, Warangal and Nizamabad. The party has accused the Congress government of "hurting religious sentiments in the name of secularism". On the other hand, Reddy clarified, "My speech was in the context of development. My intention was not to insult deities. I myself am a Hindu and respect all religions." Congress leaders and cabinet colleagues also said that the statement was "that simple".
The issue is also gaining momentum on social media. Hashtags like #BoycottRevanth and #ProtectHinduSentiments are trending. Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) affiliated organisations have also strongly criticized it and threatened to file a complaint. Telangana Police has increased security arrangements in the backdrop of the agitation.
