Jammu & Kashmir: A heated political row has erupted between the Congress and the BJP over the singing of the full version of ‘Vande Mataram’ during the inaugural ceremony of Jammu & Kashmir’s first international film festival.
During the event, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference President Farooq Abdullah stood at attention for three minutes and ten seconds out of respect for the song. However, the Congress has raised strong objections to the singing of the full ‘Vande Mataram’.
Congress General Secretary and MP K.C. Venugopal stated on social media, “The full version of ‘Vande Mataram’ does not align with the inclusive and pluralistic values ??embraced by our freedom fighters.” He recalled how leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, Sardar Patel, and Maulana Azad had—after careful consideration amidst the backdrop of communalism—accepted only the first two stanzas of ‘Vande Mataram’ as the national song. The Congress has also urged its allies to sing only the first two stanzas.
The BJP hit back sharply. BJP National Spokesperson and MP Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi said, “The Congress opposes the singing of the full ‘Vande Mataram’, even though it is done in accordance with parliamentary norms. This has exposed the true face of the Congress. Even Congress allies like the National Conference respect the full ‘Vande Mataram’. Now, only the Muslim League remains with the Congress, and the Congress itself has become the ‘Muslim League of the 21st century’.”
