There are no restrictions on storage of all edible oils and oilseeds in the state

MUMBAI: As per the guidelines of the Central Government, storage of all edible oils and edible oilseeds under the Essential Commodities Act has been started. Restrictions are in place until March 31, 2022. The state government has to decide on the extent of stock restriction on storage of edible oil and oilseeds. According to preliminary discussions with traders in the state, no stock restrictions have been imposed on edible oils and edible oilseeds in the state.

Meetings were held under the chairmanship of the Secretary, Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection, with the officials of the Department of Agriculture and Marketing, as well as with the edible oil traders' associations, on the extent to which the stock restriction should be limited to the storage of all edible oils and oilseeds. According to the discussion held in that meeting, new production of edible oilseeds will come in the next two-three months, so if the stock restriction is imposed, the farmers will suffer. Apart from this, the country imports a large amount of edible oil. No restrictions apply. At present, edible oil prices are stable. Therefore, it would not be appropriate to impose stock restrictions on domestic edible oil only, a decision was taken in these meetings after detailed discussions. In case of increase in the price of edible oil by more than 30%, a decision has been taken in this meeting to hold another meeting with the concerned trade association to impose stock restrictions. The Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection has informed that no stock restrictions have been imposed on edible oil and edible oilseeds in the State of Maharashtra as per the notification dated October 08, 2021.
