When did Marathi get the status of classical language?; The Chief Minister clarified the position in the Assembly
On the very first day of the session, NCP member Chhagan Bhujbal raised the issue of justification that Marathi language should be given elite status. We celebrate the birthday of great poet Kusumagraj as Marathi language pride day. For the past 14 years, the central government has been continuously pursuing this Marathi language to get the elite status. The superiority of literature, written evidence of the age of the language from 1500 to 2000 years, independence of the language and having a relationship between the original form of the language and today's form are fulfilled by Marathi language. However, Chhagan Bhujbal pointed out in the hall that the issue of Marathi language getting elite status is still pending.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde replied to it. "Considering the sentiments of all the members in the auditorium, soon a delegation from the state along with the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and it will be requested that action should be taken as soon as possible to give the status of classical language to Marathi," said the Chief Minister.
The demand that Marathi language should be given classical status is many years old. Various governments have consistently pursued this. Till date, the Center has given this status to six languages namely Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya. The Maharashtra government had appointed a committee under the chairmanship of veteran writer Ranganath Pathare to ensure that Marathi got elite status. This committee has submitted nearly 500 pages of reports to the central government. However, no decision has been taken yet by the central government.
