5 Meitei youth arrested on charges of
Imphal. Manipur Police has arrested five Meitei youth for looting weapons from the police armory while wearing army uniform on the night of Saturday, September 16. Charges have been leveled against them under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Official Secrets Act.
On the other hand, protests have started in Imphal demanding the release of the accused. Meera Pabis, a group of Meitei women and five local clubs had called for a two-day strike on September 19, due to which the people of the state are facing problems.
Police officials said that two rifles and more than 128 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the accused. They had looted weapons from the police armory in May and June.
One of the arrested accused has been identified as Moirangthem Anand Singh, who was in the cadre of the banned rebel organization People's Liberation Army before defecting to a faction of the KCP. He has been arrested several times before under the National Security Act, 1980.
Police say that they are making every possible effort to restore peace in the state. More than 175 people have been killed in Manipur since violence broke out on May 3.
