2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine for Optogenetics Research; Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel Jointly Honored

The official announcement of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine was made on Monday (October 5) at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. This year, the world's highest honor is being jointly awarded to three scientists: Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel. This announcement marks the official commencement of Nobel Prize Week.
These three scientists have been awarded the prize for their revolutionary research in the fields of optogenetics and light-gated ion channels. This technology has made it possible to control the activity of brain cells (neurons) using light and to study disorders related to the nervous system. Consequently, new avenues for treating serious conditions such as Parkinson's disease and depression have opened up.
The prize money for this year's Nobel Prize is 12 million Swedish kronor (approximately 1.2 million US dollars). The Nobel Prize in Medicine is officially known as the 'Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.' This prize has been awarded since 1901.
Last year (2025), the prize was awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their research on 'peripheral immune tolerance.'
