A rabies scare has gripped Piprauli village in Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh, spreading fear among the villagers after the death of a buffalo. Nearly 200 villagers were given rabies vaccinations after consuming a curd salad made from the milk of this buffalo, which had been bitten by a rabid dog. There is talk in the village that the curd salad served at a funeral ceremony proved life-threatening for the villagers.
A funeral ceremony was held on December 23rd after the death of a villager. Curd salad was served as part of the meal. However, on December 26th, a rabid dog bit a buffalo in the village, and the buffalo subsequently died. According to the post-mortem report, the buffalo was diagnosed with rabies. This shocked the villagers, as the same milk had been used to make the curd.
"The buffalo was bitten by a dog, it fell ill and died. We started fearing that we might also be at risk because we had eaten the curd salad," said a villager. In a panic, the villagers rushed to the Community Health Center in Ujhani. There, doctors administered anti-rabies vaccines to everyone.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rameshwar Mishra said, "Since the buffalo's milk was boiled, the risk is low. However, based on the principle of 'prevention is better than cure,' vaccinations were given. No infection has been detected yet. The centers were kept open despite it being the weekend."
The health department has increased surveillance in the village to prevent the spread of rumors, and the situation is under control. This incident underscores the need for awareness regarding rabies prevention.
