AMMK joins NDA; Political equations to change in Tamil Nadu
Chennai: A positive news has emerged for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections to be held in May this year. The Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) party, led by TTV Dhinakaran, has joined the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This will strengthen the BJP's position in Tamil Nadu and is likely to bring about a major change in the state's political equations.
The BJP has been trying to strengthen its presence in Tamil Nadu for many years, but has not yet achieved the desired success. Now, with an eye on the 2026 elections, the party is trying to forge alliances with local parties. In this context, TTV Dhinakaran met with Union Minister Piyush Goyal. During this meeting, Dhinakaran announced his party's entry into the NDA.
The current term of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly ends on May 10, 2026. This election will be a major challenge for the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Chief Minister M. K. Stalin will have to fight a tough battle to retain power. He faces challenges from the BJP, AIADMK, and actor Vijay's 'Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam' party.
In the 2021 elections, the DMK won 133 out of 234 seats, while the Congress secured 18 seats. The AIADMK had to be content with 66 seats, and the BJP, in alliance with the AIADMK, managed to win only 4 seats.
This new alliance is expected to increase the strength of the NDA in Tamil Nadu, which could change the electoral landscape.
