CBI's new attack on Anil Ambani: Loan fraud case of Rs 2200 crore with Bank of Baroda
Mumbai, February 27, 2026: Famous industrialist Anil Ambani's legal woes are increasing day by day. After the Enforcement Directorate (ED) seized his luxurious residence 'Abode' in Mumbai, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has now registered a new case against him. This case is related to Bank of Baroda and is related to an alleged loan fraud of over Rs 2,220 crore.
The CBI has registered this case based on a complaint filed by Bank of Baroda. It is alleged that the loans taken by Reliance Communications (RCom) between 2013 and 2017 were used for other purposes than for the approved purposes, due to which the bank had to suffer huge financial losses. According to a CBI spokesperson, after the case was registered, raids were conducted at Anil Ambani's residence and the company's registered offices. Several important documents and evidence have been seized in these raids.
RCom and its affiliated companies such as Reliance Infratel Limited and Reliance Telecom Limited had borrowed a total of Rs 31,580 crore from banks and financial institutions. A large part of these funds were used for repayment of loans from other banks, payments to related parties and temporary investments, the complaint claims. The forensic audit has found evidence of unauthorized use and misuse of these funds. The bank alleges that the loan amount was diverted in a planned manner instead of being utilized as per the planned terms.
The account was declared a non-performing asset (NPA) on June 5, 2017. The process of classifying it as a fraud was then initiated, but the Bombay High Court stayed it. After this stay was lifted on February 23, the bank immediately filed a complaint with the CBI.
Meanwhile, the ED is questioning Anil Ambani in a separate case related to money laundering. The ED questioned him for about nine hours and has summoned him again. This new case is making Anil Ambani's financial problems more serious.
