District Council Elections: Confusion over Alliances Continues; Today is the Last Day to File Nominations

In the District Council elections: Today (January 21, 2026) is the last day to file nominations for the elections to 12 Zilla Parishads (District Councils) and 125 Panchayat Samitis (Block Councils) in Maharashtra. However, the picture regarding political alliances and fronts is still unclear. In some districts, the BJP and NCP are seen coming together, while in some places, both factions of the NCP are preparing to contest together. On the other hand, the BJP is in a position to contest independently in some areas.
In Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district, local BJP office-bearers have insisted on not forming an alliance with the Shinde faction of Shiv Sena. The election process began on January 16, and today is the last day for filing nominations. Scrutiny will take place tomorrow (January 22), and the deadline for withdrawing nominations is January 27.
Since the reservation limit is within 50 percent, elections are being held in Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Solapur, Kolhapur, Latur, Satara, Pune, Sangli, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Parbhani, and Dharashiv districts. Elections in other districts have been postponed because the reservation exceeds 50 percent. The future of the elections in these districts depends on the Supreme Court's verdict.
This uncertainty has created an atmosphere of confusion among candidates and parties. The delay in making decisions regarding alliances and fronts is likely to make the election campaign even more interesting.
