It's not okay if women are teased! 'AI' watch at railway stations, this is how criminals will be searched

Indian Railway AI Safety: The central government is taking a big step to prevent crimes against women. The government is going to install Artificial Intelligence (AI) based facial recognition system at seven railway stations across the country including Delhi-Mumbai. Apart from railway stations, Safe City projects are going on in many cities including Delhi, Lucknow, Bengaluru. This will provide 24-hour security to women passengers.
According to the railways, work has started on the Safe City project in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Lucknow. In this, risk areas are being monitored through CCTV cameras, facial recognition, automatic number plate recognition, smart lighting and drones. Along with this, an integrated emergency response management system has been started at 499 stations out of 983 major railway stations, which ensures 24-hour security of women. 740 CCTV cameras have been installed at 67 stations in the Konkan Railway network.
Through AI-based facial recognition software, a photo of a suspect or offender can be uploaded from any police station, GRP, RPF or control room. This image will reach the 4K UHD cameras and if a suspect passes in front of the camera, the software will immediately inform the control room. Since most children travel by train to big cities, this technology will also help in finding children who run away from home.
The government told the Supreme Court that the number of sex offenders in the National Database of Sex Offenders (NDSO) has crossed 20 lakh. Now the central government will install Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based facial recognition system at seven railway stations across the country, including Mumbai CST and New Delhi. The Home Ministry gave this information while hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the Supreme Court Women Lawyers Association on the rising crimes against women.
Senior advocate Mahalaxmi Pavani of the Women Lawyers Association said that according to the National Crime Records Bureau data, crimes against women have increased from 58.8 per lakh in 2018 to 66.4 in 2022. In 2022, 23.66 lakh cases were pending, out of which only 1.5 lakh cases were disposed of and only 38,136 cases resulted in conviction. The association says that despite technological measures like CCTNS, NDSO, ITSSO, ERSS and I4C, there has been no major change in the criminal justice system.
