Jaishankar's 670 km Road Trip in Trump's America: The Shocking Consequence of a Government Shutdown

New York: The Trump administration's 'America First' policy, while attempting to pressure countries worldwide, has led to embarrassing situations for the United States itself. While pursuing self-serving interests in countries like Ukraine, China, and Afghanistan, Trump also pressured nations like India by imposing tariffs. Against this backdrop, in September 2025, India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had to undertake a 670-kilometer (416-mile) road trip in the US due to the cancellation of flights caused by a government shutdown. This shocking incident has recently come to light through a report from the American Diplomatic Security Service.
While Jaishankar was on a visit to the US, the sudden government shutdown led to the cancellation of commercial flights. Missing a crucial meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres was not an option. Therefore, the American security apparatus decided to travel to New York by road. The journey began from the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge near the Canadian border and lasted seven hours in freezing temperatures. Despite the challenging roads and biting cold, Jaishankar's convoy reached Manhattan. Twenty-seven security agents accompanied him on this journey.
Upon entering New York City, they encountered a woman lying in a pool of blood on the road, the victim of a hit-and-run accident. Despite protocol, the security team stopped the convoy, provided first aid to the woman, controlled traffic, and called an ambulance. This incident highlights the instability of the Trump administration, which led to such a predicament for the powerful United States.
