Kalyan-Dombivli Mayoral Post: Will ST Reservation Change Political Equations?

Kalyan-Dombivli Mayoral Post: The reservation draw for the mayoral posts of 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra has recently been announced. In this draw, the mayoral post of the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation has been reserved for Scheduled Tribe (ST) men. This draw was announced on January 22, 2026, and is likely to bring about a major change in local politics. While discussions about an alliance between the MNS and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena have been ongoing for the past few days, this reservation has added a new twist.
The BJP might offer a proposal to the MNS to install an ST mayor in Kalyan-Dombivli, as the MNS has candidates available in this category. Similarly, Shinde's Shiv Sena also has some ST candidates. Therefore, the BJP could also join hands with Shinde's Shiv Sena. Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena is unlikely to object to this, as Sanjay Raut had previously stated, "We might ally with the BJP, but not with Shinde's Sena."
According to the reservation draw, the Kalyan-Dombivli mayoral post is reserved for ST men. In other municipal corporations, reservations have been announced as follows: Thane for SC, Jalna for SC women, Latur for SC women, and Kolhapur for OBC. Many municipal corporations will have mayors from the OBC and open categories.
These developments are likely to intensify the power struggle in Kalyan-Dombivli. It will be interesting to see which party gains the upper hand in the upcoming elections.
