karnataka election live:-Karnataka Assembly Election Results: After weeks of intense political activity, the stage is finally set for the results of the 2023 Karnataka assembly elections. Over 3.8 crore voters in the state exercised their franchise on May 10 to seal the fate of the ruling BJP, the opposition Congress, regional heavyweight JD(S) and a host of other parties as well as Independents.
* For BJP, the 2023 elections were a battle of prestige with the party going all out to retain its southern citadel. It was also a test of CM Basavaraj Bommai, who replaced party veteran and Lingayat strongman BS Yediyurappa for the top post in 2021.
* Congress, which saw its state tally dwindle to 2 last year, is seeking a comeback ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. After a victory in Himachal Pradesh last year, the grand old party is now eyeing a triumph in Karnataka. A possible victory will also set the tone for the party ahead of its key contests against BJP in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh later this year.
* JD(S) helped Congress form the government in 2018 and also bagged the coveted post of chief minister with HD Kumaraswamy heading the government. The government was toppled in 2019 after MLAs switched to BJP. Since then, the party has witnessed a string of defections. In 2023, JD(S) is hoping to retain its Vokkaliga voter base and expand its seat share tally to wield a strong bargaining chip in case there's a fractured mandate.
* The exit polls have predicted a hung assembly in the state this year but most of them have given a distinct edge to the Congress. Hung assembly is not uncommon in Karnataka, a state known for political instability. In the last 15 years, there have been four hung assemblies in the state.
