Major relief from the Central Government to curb onion price hikes; onions available at ?35/kg via NAFED, NCCF, and government outlets.
Breaking News: Onions, which were available for ?30–35 per kg just a few days ago, are now selling at ?60–65 per kg. The sudden surge in wholesale and retail onion prices has dealt a significant blow to ordinary consumers. Against this backdrop, the Central Government has taken a major step to curb the rising prices and provide relief to the public.
The Central Government has decided to make onions available at a subsidized rate of approximately ?35 per kg—roughly half the current market price. To facilitate this, onions from the government buffer stock in Nashik, Maharashtra, will be transported across the country via special freight trains. These trains have been named 'Kanda Express' (Onion Express).
The first 'Kanda Express' consignment is being dispatched to Chennai, Madurai, Ernakulam, and Guwahati. Subsequently, a second consignment carrying around 800 metric tonnes of onions will soon reach Delhi and North India.
Where can you buy them?
Ordinary consumers can purchase these affordable onions at ?35 per kg from government outlets and mobile vans in various cities. These onions will be available through NAFED, the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF), and Kendriya Bhandar. Additionally, onions can be purchased at reasonable rates from mobile vans operated by NCCF and NAFED, as well as from 'Bharat Brand' outlets.
