Now Ready for Dialogue! RSS Critic Expresses Desire to Meet Mohan Bhagwat
New York: Amidst Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat's tour of the United States, a prominent critic—who had previously demanded a ban on the RSS—has shifted his stance. Dr. Asif Mahmood, a Commissioner at the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), has now expressed a desire to meet Mohan Bhagwat for a discussion.
Speaking to ANI, Dr. Asif Mahmood said, "If the opportunity arises, I would certainly be willing to meet him. If arrangements can be made, we would be happy to sit down with him for a discussion and to raise public awareness."
Previously, Asif Mahmood had demanded a ban on the RSS and opposed Mohan Bhagwat's events. However, he has now shown a willingness to engage in open dialogue.
Mohan Bhagwat is currently in New York. He has visited the ISKCON temple and is scheduled to deliver a speech at the Infosys Theater in Madison Square Garden on August 29. Approximately 5,000 members of the Indian diaspora are expected to attend the event. Reports indicate that the event is receiving a tremendous response from the Indian community in the US.
In the same interview, Dr. Asif Mahmood also strongly criticized religious oppression in Pakistan. He has repeatedly voiced concerns regarding the persecution of minorities, particularly the forced conversion of Hindu girls. He also expressed concern over the state of religious freedom in Pakistan and China.
