Rahul Gandhi's attack on Election Commission: Presented facts along with claims of vote theft
New Delhi, 7 August 2025: Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday made serious allegations against the Election Commission (ECI) in a press conference. He claimed that there was massive voter rigging in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the Election Commission worked in collusion with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Rahul Gandhi presented alleged evidence citing data from Karnataka's Bengaluru Central Lok Sabha constituency, especially the Mahadevpura assembly seat.
Key allegations and evidence of Rahul Gandhi
Duplicate voters: Rahul Gandhi claimed that 11,965 duplicate voters were found in the Mahadevpura assembly constituency. He mentioned as an example a man named Gurkirat Singh, who was allegedly registered as a voter in three different states.
Fake addresses: The Congress probe found 40,009 voters' addresses to be fake or invalid. Rahul said these addresses were either non-existent or wrongly entered.
Bulk voters: 10,452 voters were registered at the same address, which Rahul termed as an example of "bulk voting".
Invalid photos: Photos of 4,132 voters were invalid, raising questions over the credibility of the voter list.
Misuse of Form 6: Form 6, used for new voters, was misused 33,692 times. Rahul alleged that it was used to add fake voters.
Mysterious increase in voters in Maharashtra: Rahul claimed that 40 lakh fake voters were added in 5 months in the Maharashtra assembly elections. He questioned how there was a sudden surge in voting after 5 pm.
Rahul Gandhi said, "We have 100% proof that the Election Commission is allowing rigging. This is a crime against the Indian Constitution and flag." He also alleged that the Election Commission refused to provide electronic voter data and CCTV footage of the last 10-15 years, which could expose the rigging.
Election Commission's response
In response to Rahul Gandhi's allegations, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Karnataka wrote to him asking him to submit evidence along with an affidavit. The CEOs of Karnataka, Maharashtra and Haryana said that Rahul Gandhi will have to formally lodge his complaints, as election results can only be challenged through an election petition in the High Court. The Karnataka CEO also said that the deadline for filing petitions for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections has expired.
The Election Commission termed Rahul's claims as "baseless" and said, "Either he should sign the affidavit and provide evidence, or stop misleading the people of India."
BJP's reaction
The BJP rejected Rahul Gandhi's allegations, calling them "baseless". BJP MP PC Mohan, who won from Bengaluru Central, said his victory was due to the support of Hindu voters and not due to any manipulation. Union minister Kiren Rijiju said, "Rahul Gandhi has lost his cool after the defeat and is defaming constitutional institutions."
Congress's next strategy
Rahul Gandhi announced that the Congress will hold a protest march to the Election Commission's office in Bengaluru on August 8. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has also supported Rahul's allegations and demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's resignation.
"We will ensure that those who harm democracy and the Constitution are not spared," Rahul Gandhi said. He claimed that if the Election Commission provides digital data, rigging can be exposed in 30 seconds.
