Recognition of Government Medical College, Alibag by the Indian Council of Medical Sciences

Alibag - The Government Medical College of Alibag has been recognized by the Indian Council of Medical Sciences. The college at Alibag will start this year. Raigad Guardian Minister Aditi Tatkare informed at a press conference that 100 students will be admitted in the first phase. Chief Executive Officer Kiran Patil, Additional Collector Amol Yadav, Superintendent of Police Ashok Dudhe, District Surgeon Suhas Mane and Principal of Government Medical College Girish Thakur were present on the occasion.

As per the Government Resolution dated 31st January, 2012, the Department of Medical Education and Medicine, Government of Maharashtra had approved the setting up of a Government Medical College with a capacity of 100 students and a 500-bed hospital at Alibag, subject to the approval of the Indian Council of Medical Sciences. But later, due to lack of space, the proposal was stuck in red tape. Until 2020, there was no movement in this regard. Now, after a long wait of nine years, the Medical Council of India has approved the Government Medical College at Alibag. This college with a capacity of 100 students will start from this year.
The district hospital at Alibag has been attached by the medical education department for the college for the next three years. The old building of the secondary school at RCF Colony Kurul and six other buildings have been made available for the college. Construction work of lecture hall and library has been started in the district hospital. A plot of 53 acres at Usar has been made available for the construction of a new building for the college. A new building will be constructed at a cost of Rs 406 crore. Its budget has been given administrative approval. 1 thousand 072 posts will be filled for the college in four years. Tatkare said that the expenditure required for this has been approved.
The state government had applied to the Indian Council of Medical Sciences for approval after fulfilling all the requirements for a medical college in the last eight months. The approval came after a team from the Medical Council visited Alibag last month to review the medical college's preparations. He said that this is fulfilling Raigadkar's dream of a medical college. This college will strengthen the health system of Raigad. He appealed to the students of Konkan to choose the government medical college of Alibag during the admission process.
