ST's electric buses: Loss or gain? What is the transport minister's plan?

Mumbai: ST Corporation has signed an agreement to lease 5150 electric buses, of which 220 buses have been supplied so far. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik reviewed the supply of these buses in a meeting held at the ministry on Friday. On this occasion, he directed the bus supplier company to supply as per the revised schedule. Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Sethi, ST Corporation Managing Director Dr. Madhav Kusekar and company representative K.V. Pradeep were present in the meeting.
**Supply planning as per revised agreement**
Minister Sarnaik said that Eway Trans Pvt. Ltd. has signed an agreement to supply 5150 electric buses. This includes 12-meter and 9-meter long buses. So far, 220 buses have been supplied, and the company was instructed to supply the remaining buses as per the revised agreement. The corporation has created a new account and given Rs 60 crore to the company from the income of these buses, and plans to give the remaining Rs 40 crore.
**Will it have to bear a loss of Rs 3191 crore?**
The ST Corporation may have to bear a loss of Rs 3191 crore in the next few years due to the operational loss of these buses. The loss is assumed to be Rs 12 per kilometer for 12-meter buses and Rs 16 per kilometer for 9-meter buses. A proposal will be sent to the state government for Viability Gap Funding to make up for this loss. A decision in this regard will be taken after discussing this with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Sarnaik clarified.
**Hi-tech Ro-Pax facility in Konkan**
Meanwhile, the facility of Hi-tech Ro-Pax boats has been made available to facilitate travel in Konkan. Sarnaik also informed that due to this, the journey from Mumbai to Malvan can be completed in less time.
