Tej Pratap's 'Stadium Bomb'; Mega Vision to Make Bihar a Cricket Hub
Patna, October 25, 2025 (Lokmat Special) – RJD leader and former minister Tej Pratap Yadav has hit the ground running in the Bihar assembly elections. He has attracted everyone's attention by announcing the construction of a grand international-class cricket stadium near Patna. Notably, his 'mega promise' to host a cricket match between India and Pakistan in this stadium has become a topic of discussion.
"Cricket fever should rise in Bihar! If we come to power, we will build a modern stadium with a capacity of 1 lakh spectators near Patna. The first match in it will be India vs Pakistan!" Tej Pratap announced in his campaign rally. This announcement created a stir in political circles, while creating an atmosphere of excitement among cricket lovers.
Features of the stadium: What will be special?
Tej Pratap said that this stadium will be as per ICC standards. It will have the following facilities:
A capacity of over 1 lakh spectators
State-of-the-art floodlights, drainage system
International standard pitch, net practice area
VIP box, media centre, parking facilities
Residential complex for players including hotel, gym, swimming pool
“This stadium will not only become a centre for cricket, but also a centre for employment for the youth of Bihar,” he asserted.
Will it shake up political equations?
The issue of cricket stadiums is not new in Bihar. Earlier, the Nitish Kumar government had promised to build stadiums in Mithila and Magadh regions, but in reality, not much progress has been made. Tej Pratap, while criticising the Nitish government on this issue, said, “Not a single international match has been held in Bihar in 17 years. If we come to power, we will hold an India-Pakistan match in the first year!”
This announcement has given a new impetus to the RJD’s campaign. Tej Pratap’s ‘cricket promise’ is going viral, especially among young voters. The hashtags #BiharCricketStadium and #IndiaVsPakInPatna are trending on social media.
Is an India-Pak match possible?
According to cricket experts, organizing an India-Pak match is challenging from both political and sporting perspectives. However, with the permission of BCCI and ICC, it is possible to play the match at a neutral venue. Tej Pratap has shown his readiness to discuss this with BCCI.
“We will request the central government to hold this match in Bihar. This will not only be a game, but also a symbol of Bihar’s identity,” he explained.
Opposition’s attack
BJP leader and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sinha called this announcement an ‘election jumla’. “If you want to build a cricket stadium, first arrange roads, bridges, electricity in Bihar. Give jobs to Bihar’s youth before bringing the Pakistan match,” he said.
A new chapter in the history of Bihar cricket?
Currently, Bihar has two stadiums, Moin-ul-Haq Stadium (Patna) and Rajgir International Cricket Stadium (Rajgir). But both are not of international standard. Cricket commentator Ayushman Patna expressed the opinion that if Tej Pratap's stadium actually comes to life, then a golden era will begin in the history of Bihar cricket.
A dose of cricket in the campaign
Tej Pratap was seen giving the message of 'hitting sixes' with a cricket bat in his hand during the campaign meetings. "Nitish Kumar's government 'outed' Bihar. Now that RJD comes to power, Bihar will make a 'century'!" His slogan was very much liked by the audience.
What next?
Due to Tej Pratap's announcement, the issue of a cricket stadium has come to the forefront in the Bihar elections. RJD has also included it in its manifesto. Now it will be interesting to see how much the voters support this 'cricket promise'.
