US Uneasy Over BRICS' Growing Influence; Plans to Impose 100% Tariffs on Russian Oil Buyers; 9 Countries, Including India, Named

Concern is mounting in the US over the rising power of BRICS nations and shifting global dynamics. A significant proposal has been introduced in the US Congress, alleging that Russia's crude oil trade is fueling its war against Ukraine. Under this proposal, plans are underway to impose a 100% import tariff on countries that purchase large quantities of oil from Russia. India, China, and other major nations are explicitly named in this context.
The ‘Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act,’ passed by the US Senate with a record number of votes last month, is currently under consideration in the House of Representatives. With the House likely to go into recess soon ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, only a few days remain to reach a final decision on the bill. Significant amendments have now been proposed for this legislation.
Proposal Targeting 9 Countries, Including India
Democratic Congressman Steny Hoyer has introduced an amendment in Congress. In addition to China and India, the proposal mentions countries such as Turkey, Azerbaijan, Hungary, Slovakia, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. It seeks to authorize US President Donald Trump to impose a 100% tariff on these nations for importing oil and energy products from Russia.
The primary objective of the bill is to impose strict sanctions on Russia's energy sector and the "shadow fleet" that helps Moscow circumvent existing sanctions. However, this proposal also presents a major trade challenge for allies like India. Divergent Views in the US
Meanwhile, American politics reveals a divide on this issue. Democratic Congressman Gregory Meeks has opposed granting President Trump broad authority regarding tariffs, calling for the complete repeal of the relevant provision. At the same time, he has argued that the President should retain the authority to relax these restrictions for a 90-day period if national security interests require it. The new proposals also include a provision to extend $15 billion in direct loans to Ukraine.
The House Rules Committee has made these new amendments public, and the legislation is now in the final stages of approval, awaiting President Trump's signature. Consequently, the world is closely watching this new stance taken by the US, and all eyes are on the position India will adopt in response.
