1.25 Crore Women Dropped from 'Ladki Bahin' Scheme? Supriya Sule Corners the Government

Have 80 Lakh Women Been Declared Ineligible? Supriya Sule Launches Fierce Criticism of the Mahayuti Government Over the 'Ladki Bahin' Scheme
Mumbai: Supriya Sule, MP from the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), has launched a scathing attack on the Mahayuti government over a massive discrepancy in the number of beneficiaries under the 'Chief Minister's Ladki Bahin' (Beloved Sister) scheme. She has demanded a high-level inquiry, pointing out that while the government initially claimed it would provide benefits to 2.38 crore women, the official government portal currently displays only 1.06 crore approved applications.
Writing on the social media platform 'X', Supriya Sule noted that, as of December 2024, the government had claimed to have distributed over ?17,505 crore to 2.38 crore women. Subsequently, this figure reportedly rose to 2.48 crore. However, after making e-KYC (electronic Know Your Customer) verification mandatory, the number of beneficiaries witnessed a rapid decline.
Based on currently available data, it appears that approximately 80 lakh women have been deemed ineligible, creating a scenario where only 1.66 crore women are set to receive the benefits. The official government portal itself currently displays a total of 1.12 crore applications submitted, with only 1.06 crore applications shown as approved. This implies that more than 1.25 crore women have effectively been excluded from the scheme.
Supriya Sule stated, "This is the public's tax money—their hard-earned money. If the portal is showing such a drastically low number today, who exactly were the initial beneficiaries? For the past year and a half, was the government distributing funds to ineligible individuals?"
Supriya Sule's Key Demands:
A high-level committee must be constituted to conduct a thorough inquiry into the entire matter.
An independent financial and administrative audit of the scheme should be conducted to provide transparent information regarding where the taxpayers' money has gone.
Not a single eligible woman should be deprived of the scheme's benefits due to technical glitches or a failure to complete the e-KYC process. Supriya Sule clarified that every eligible woman in Maharashtra must regularly receive the benefits of this scheme.
