3 Million Affordable Homes in Mumbai-MMR Over 20 Years; Deputy CM Shinde Makes Major Announcement
Mumbai, August 27: The Mahayuti government has set an ambitious target to construct 3 million (30 lakh) affordable homes across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including Mumbai city, over the next 20 years. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde gave this assurance.
Shinde stated that there is currently a need for 1 million homes in Mumbai and 2 million in the MMR. In Mumbai, a total of 1 million homes will be built—600,000 through the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) and 400,000 through MHADA and other projects. Another 2 million homes will be constructed by ensuring balanced development in areas such as Thane, Mira-Bhayandar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Navi Mumbai, Ulhasnagar, and Bhiwandi. These 3 million homes will be completed by 2047, come what may.
Noting that he has held the Urban Development portfolio for seven years and the Housing portfolio for two, Shinde said that the state's development has gained real momentum since the Mahayuti government came to power. The government's policy is "acceleration of work, not suspension of work," with robust infrastructure, modern transport systems, and affordable housing serving as the key pillars of development.
The Unified Development Control and Promotion Regulations (UDCPR) have paved the way for the redevelopment of old and stalled building projects. He described the Cluster Development Scheme for unauthorized buildings as revolutionary. This scheme will provide not just homes but also 23 amenities, including digital libraries, open spaces, community halls, primary health centers, and women's empowerment centers. Through this initiative, the 'Smart City' concept is being turned into reality.
To alleviate population pressure in Thane, the 'Thane Internal Ring Metro' project is being implemented. Additionally, the ambitious 'Third Mumbai' project is being developed. Aerocity, Medicity, Sports City, Educity, and IT-Fintech hubs will be developed in the vicinity of the Navi Mumbai Airport, Atal Setu, JNPA, and the Samruddhi Mahamarg.
