Aam Aadmi Party's Leap Towards Mumbai - Kejriwal's Campaign Blitz with 227 Candidates

Mumbai: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has made a significant claim regarding the 2026 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. The party has announced that it will field candidates independently in all 227 wards, and national convener Arvind Kejriwal himself will campaign in Mumbai. This announcement comes after the party's first victory in the local body elections in Maharashtra, and the party considers this election crucial for strengthening its political base in Mumbai.
As the BMC is the richest municipal corporation in the country, AAP will focus on urban governance, transparency, and corruption-free administration in this election. The election will be held in a single phase on January 15, 2026, and the results will be declared on January 16. The party has released a list of star campaigners, including prominent leaders like Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Bhagwant Mann, Sanjay Singh, Satyendar Jain, Atishi, and Saurabh Bharadwaj. In addition, 40 leaders, including Pankaj Kumar Gupta, Durgesh Pathak, Imran Hussain, Dilip Pandey, Amanatullah Khan, Preeti Sharma Menon, Kishore Mandhyan, Reuben Mascarenhas, Vijay Khishrsagar, Payal Patel, and Ishudan Gadhvi, have been given the responsibility of campaigning.
Referring to its first victory in Maharashtra, AAP expressed pride in the victory of Shalini Tai in Ward No. 2 of the Nevasa Nagar Panchayat in Ahmednagar district. The role of District President Rajubhau Aghav, Taluka President Advocate Sadiq Shiledar, leader Sanjay Sukhdhan, and local workers was crucial in this victory. The party leadership believes that this grassroots success will boost confidence for a major battle like the BMC elections.
AAP MP Sanjay Singh said, "Mumbai needs AAP's successful governance model from Delhi and Punjab. AAP has the capacity to provide quality education, healthcare, electricity, and water supply without corruption and debt. Even a small presence in the BMC will be beneficial for the voters." This statement comes against the backdrop of the Mahayuti's recent local election successes, and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has predicted a BJP victory in the Mumbai mayoral election.
The AAP will be campaigning in Mumbai to reach urban voters through star campaigners, focusing on development, civic services, and an anti-corruption agenda. This election has the potential to change the political equations in Maharashtra.
