New Delhi/Kolkata: Following the BJP's resounding victory over Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress in the West Bengal Assembly elections, preparations for the formation of a BJP government in the state are now in full swing. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 9, 2026, and the entire nation is watching closely to see who will become the next Chief Minister.

Agnimitra Paul: She secured a massive victory from the Asansol South constituency with a margin of 40,839 votes. By profession, she is a renowned fashion designer. After being elected for the first time in 2021, she also served as the Vice President of the Bengal BJP.
Roopa Ganguly: Best known for her role in the television series 'Mahabharata', Roopa Ganguly won from the Sonarpur South constituency by a margin of over 35,000 votes. She also served as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Rajya Sabha from 2016 to 2022.
Who Are the Other Contenders?
Suvendu Adhikari's name is at the forefront of the race for the Chief Minister's post. He has defeated Mamata Banerjee in both the Bhabanipur and Nandigram constituencies. Additionally, the names of Bengal BJP State President Samik Bhattacharya, Dilip Ghosh, and RSS leader Utpal Maharaj are also being discussed.
Key meetings are scheduled to be held in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP President Nitin Nabin, during which the final decision is expected to be taken. Amit Shah has been appointed as the central observer for the selection of the Legislature Party Leader. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi will serve as the co-observer.
