Bangladesh Outraged by Sheikh Hasina’s Interview in New Delhi; Accuses India of Granting Permission Despite Prior Warning
Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, interacted publicly with the media in New Delhi for the first time in two years. The Dhaka government has expressed strong displeasure over this interview. On Wednesday (August 5), the Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official statement raising serious objections with India.
The statement noted that Sheikh Hasina—an accused individual currently a fugitive—was permitted to hold a live media interaction in New Delhi. Bangladesh alleged that during this interaction, Hasina and her associates made vitriolic and inflammatory statements against Bangladesh and its citizens.
The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry clarified that the Indian government had been forewarned about the potential impact such an event could have on bilateral relations between the two nations. Despite this, Dhaka expressed deep dismay that permission was granted for this public event.
Bangladesh termed this action a direct affront to its sovereignty. The Ministry stated that Sheikh Hasina’s actions from Indian soil—occurring on the very day Bangladeshi citizens were observing the second anniversary of the ‘July Revolution’—constituted a grave insult to the martyrs of that revolution. Highlighting the killings of innocent civilians and children during the events of July-August 2024, the Ministry asserted that attempts by the fugitive Hasina and her associates to rewrite history would prove futile.
A firm resolve was expressed that Bangladesh would never return to the dark era of fascism nor remain dependent on any other nation. A warning was also issued that the culpable Sheikh Hasina and her network would never again find a place in Bangladeshi politics. The statement notes that providing Sheikh Hasina with an opportunity to speak openly to the media hurts the sentiments of the people of Bangladesh and could adversely affect India-Bangladesh relations.
